So what exactly are habits?
Habits are actions that we take without thinking. They can be wanted or unwanted, but whatever they are, we tend to take them for granted. Sometimes they can help us - for example, imagine how much time we would spend if every time we got up in the morning we had to learn how to walk?
When we were born we could only perform very basic functions essential for life - to alert someone that we needed food, water, warmth, cleaning and sleep. However, we were also born with a great capacity for learning, and our habits are one of the results of that learning.
Walking was probably one of the first habits you mastered. Even though you didn't succeed first time, and probably fell over, you didn't give up, you kept going. Consider how many people give up trying to break a habit when something goes wrong and they lull back to old ways. If we had that attitude when we where learning to walk then none of us would have got up. We would all be on the floor sucking fluff!
Breaking your Habits is as easy as learning them...
You can break your habit if you are willing to consider a new perspective:
- Remember you were not born with your bad habit, you learned it and you can unlearn it.
- You've practised your habit to the extent that you are good and skilled at it. Now is the time to stop and become good at doing something else.
- Don't look for scapegoats and blame others, be willing and responsible for breaking your unwanted habit.
- Don't label your habits good or bad, they are just things you do. The question is "do you wish to carry on doing them?"
- It doesn’t matter whether you believe that you can or you believe that you can't. Either way, you're right. Remember you get what you focus on. If you focus on how hard and difficult it is to break a habit then that's exactly how it will be.
- The best way to end a habit is to first imagine yourself having conquered it. Take the time to imagine yourself being in total control. Act it out in your mind.
- Repetition is the mother of all skills so when you've acted it out in your mind many times, just like an actor would, then take the time to act it out for real.
- Remember success is often only just on the other side of failure, so don't expect to get everything right straight away. If you make a mistake and take a backwards step, then learn from it and move on.
- Be patient and give yourself the opportunity and the time to change.
